That’s right, all these pictures are from Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I am from and where the biggest concentration of nihonjin outside of Japan exists! In the early 20th century there was a massive influx of japanese immigrants to Brazil. They were usually made to work very hard in coffee farms, often tricked into never ending debt by the farmers, and they suffered a lot of prejudice during the Second World War. But despite this, they were able to build a new better life for themselves and their children and today Japanese culture is very present and very appreciated in Brazil. Their are even some towns where most of the citizens have Japanese as their native tongue!

ReplyDeleteEven though they might be second or even third generation Brazilians, they still keep their heritage very alive! And in states like Sao Paulo, aspects of the Japanese culture have been very well incorporated.
